It’s not every day you come across an Indian Scotsman building a handful of charming condos on a Caribbean Island. But that is exactly what is happening on the beautiful North Shore of Cozumel, where you will find a Scotsman born of Sikh Indian parents with a big heart and a brave dream.

Gurjit Singh Lalli – “Gee” to those that know him - made the move to Mexico a few years ago to pursue his brave dream: the construction of Hacienda Monte Cristo. Now completed, the Hacienda consists of fourteen award winning Mexican and Mediterranean style apartments and penthouses, each with one, two or three bedrooms, all designed by a talented local architect and friend.

Gee admits that the process has not all been plain sailing, “Mexico is more like India than Scotland” he jokes. Nonetheless, he is confident that the highly original architecture - located less than a minute from one of the island’s best beaches - will prove popular with clients who appreciate real estate investment and cares for the delights of Cozumel’s fantastic climate and stunning marine ecology. Given that the Hacienda is a stone’s throw from the island’s Nicklaus-designed PGA golf course, it’s bound to attract a few golfers too.latest003

“The architect is an artist”, explains Gee, “and the Hacienda’s relaxing architecture is very important. It plays with the natural elements. There are breezy rooftop gardens, fountains, sunny areas, shady areas and views of the sunrise and sunset.” He jokes that some customers have even accredited the calming emotional effect of the building to its Feng Shui.
Every one of the fourteen residences is different. Each is sculptured by a selected team of workers - a team that he treats like his very own family (this is where Gee’s reputation for having a big heart stems from). There is not a right-angle to be found anywhere in the Hacienda. Every corner, doorway and window has been painstakingly smoothed to a curve by his dedicated family of workers. The cool curves are complemented by domes, a lush interior garden pool area, sumptuous balconies and rooftop terraces with sensational views for all the residents to share and enjoy.

Gee’s dream is not simply about building concrete box apartments, making a fast buck and moving swiftly on like many other developers. Instead, Gee’s heart will stay in the project. He plans to oversee the optional rental management program and get involved in residents’ sailing, fishing and watersport activities.

Construction is complete, with prices starting affordably at $220,000usd sales are going well. Gee’s list of customers already boasts an impressive number of buyers from around the world and it looks like demand will easily outstrip supply. So, if you’re on the lookout for a truly unique vacation retreat you should come to Cozumel quick - when you arrive just look for the Indian with a brave heart.
